BASEBALL INFORMATION
Shelby Youth Ball is a Parent/Guardian/Volunteer operated program supported by the Town of Shelby. You do not have to be a Town of Shelby resident to be a member of Shelby Youth Ball. This program is open to all area youth. Adult volunteers are essential for coaching, field work, concessions, and fund raising. Please inquire at the SYB Concession Stand or contact a Board or Committee Member. The kids need your help!

COMPETITION LEVELS FOR ALL BASEBALL DIVISIONS:
Shelby Youth Baseball offers competition at the "A", "B", and "C" levels. Players are selected through tryouts for the "A" and "B" teams. No tryouts are needed for the "C" level. Player signup begins in March. Please register all interested players at the SYB Registration Meetings (see SYB Calendar for dates & times for this season).
A & B Level: Teams are selected via 2-day tryout process in mid-April. This level is recommended for skilled and experienced players. High commitment and dedication level is expected.
A & B Tournament Teams: A strong commitment by players as well as their parents is needed to participate at the "A" or "B" level. This includes attending practices regularly. Players should also make themselves available to attend all of the scheduled games and tournaments during the season. Extra out of the pocket expenses can be expected when traveling out of the area for tournaments. These teams are entered to play in a tournament on most every weekend during June and July. All players who tryout and are not selected for an "A" or "B" team automatically become eligible to be drafted onto a "C" team.
C Level: No tryout required. Players may have varying skill levels. A reasonable level of commitment is expected throughout the season. Advance notice for absence is always appreciated.
C Teams: “C” teams play twice a week and have the option of participating in 1-2 weekend tournaments. With few exceptions, “C” team players are randomly selected during the SYB Draft. The SYB Draft is conducted within a week or so of tryouts (after the final tryout team rosters have been set) in the last Tuesday in April or first Tuesday in May. No players are allowed at the draft (prospective coaches only).

2008 BASEBALL TRYOUTS:
The 2008 Baseball Tryouts are scheduled for Saturday, April 12 and Sunday, April 13.
SYB Recommendations for Tryouts (preparation):
• No cleats are allowed at the indoor tryouts held in the Central High School gyms. Shorts may be worn to the indoor session.
• It is recommended that sweatshirts and sweatpants or baseball pants should be brought to the outdoor sessions regardless of weather conditions (this is Wisconsin after all). Unfortunately, there is a lot of “downtime” where the player will feel the effects of the weather during the tryout sessions.
• Bring a duffle bag to carry your glove, cleats, bat, coat, sweatshirt, etc.
• Regardless of weather conditions, please show up at the ball fields.
• The Tryout Committee may have to scale back the repetitions or run indoor tryouts the whole weekend. Every effort will be made to complete the tryout sessions while keeping things as fair as possible for all players involved.
• All tryout sessions for a particular age group must be attended. The SYB Tryout Committee must be notified one week prior for any absences or exceptions (see phone numbers below).
• Each player should attempt to “workout” some prior to attending the SYB Tryouts.
Note: With the exception of CHS softball practices/games in the spring, the SYB fields are always open for practice by any SYB players.

Section A: Registration and Attendance
1. A player must be registered in Shelby Youth Baseball AND registered for tryouts to be eligible to tryout for an "A" or "B" level team. A representative of the Tryout Committee will be present at all published registration dates.
2. Tryout dates are set by the Tryout Committee and published prior to SYB Registration dates.
a. If a player cannot attend the tryouts on the dates established by the Committee, that player can petition for a separate tryout.
b. The petition must be in writing and must inform the Committee of the player's name, telephone number, date of birth, and the SPECIFIC reason why the player cannot attend.
c. The Committee will make every effort to accommodate players with a legitimate reason for not attending.
d. There is the possibility that an alternate date may not be possible, due to scheduling, weather, and/or grader availability.
e. The Committee has the right to accept or reject any petition for an alternate tryout date.
f. In 2007, the petition for an alternate tryout date must be received by March 27th.
g. The player is responsible for contacting the Committee to make sure the new tryout date has been scheduled.
Note: Alternate tryout dates are not be granted lightly. To keep the tryout process as fair as possible, all efforts should be made to attend the originally scheduled tryout date.
3. The SYB Executive Board will meet prior to the beginning of the tryouts to establish a preliminary number of teams that could be designated as "A" or "B" level teams for each age division. The actual number of teams may change depending upon tryout results.
Section B: Tryout Procedures
1. Players will be graded in a number of different skill categories including: hitting, pitching, infield, outfield, and base-running.
2. At the beginning of tryouts, players will be given a Tryout ID number and will be separated into smaller groups. Instructions will be given to players at each grading station before the grading begins. Players need to pay attention and follow the directions given. Graders will be judging a player's ability to follow directions, interact with other players, as well as specific baseball skills.
3. At the end of each tryout, the graders will evaluate all players. It is important that you attend all sessions of the tryouts as total scores are compared.
4. At the conclusion of the final tryout, all participants will be notified of their results. We will attempt to notify players of results on the same evening as completion of tryouts. The selection of these teams is not an easy process. Please be patient and allow the process to take its course.
5. Players selected for "A" or "B" level teams, along with their parent(s) of guardian(s), will be required to attend a team meeting following tryouts. Date, time, and location of the Traveling Team meeting should be posted on the SYB Calendar.
6. SYB needs the help of many volunteers to grade, coordinate and supervise the tryout process (20+ per age group). Please consider volunteering on this busy and important weekend.
Note: No parent or guardian of any player trying out will be allowed to participate in grading or selection of the players for the team their child is trying out for.
7. The following Tryout Committee members may be contacted if you have further questions regarding the Tryout Procedures or you would like to volunteer to help:
