Softball Tryout Information
Shelby Youth Ball offers competitive play at two different softball levels:
• Upper Level: Skilled and experienced players. Teams are selected through tryouts. Teams play league games during week and play in tournaments most weekends during June and July. (See attached “Tentative Tournament Schedule” for each Upper Level Team.) Note: Players who tryout, but are not selected for an Upper Level Team will automatically be placed on a Lower Level Team.
NOTE: A strong commitment by players as well as their parents is required to participate at the Upper Level. This includes attending practices regularly and on time and being available to attend most, if not all, of the scheduled games and tournaments during the season. In addition, extra out-of-the-pocket expenses can be expected, especially when traveling out of the area for tournaments.
• Lower Level: No tryouts. Varied skill levels. Teams will play league games during the week and may participate in a weekend tournament or two.

TRYOUT REQUIREMENTS & PROCEDURES
• Players need to be AT LEAST 9 years old on or before January 1, 2008 to tryout for the 10 & Under team.
• Players will be graded in 3 different categories including: hitting/bunting, in-fielding and outfielding. The pitching station will be optional and will not count as part of the player’s overall tryout score. The pitching station will only determine the top 2 pitcher’s for each team.
• At the beginning of tryouts, players will be separated into groups. Instructions will be given to players at each grading station before the grading begins.
• Players need to pay attention and follow the directions given.
• Graders will be judging a player’s ability to follow directions, their behavior during tryouts, how the player interacts with other players, as well as the player’s specific softball skills.
• Regardless of weather conditions, please show up at the designated locations for the tryouts. Every effort will be made to run the tryouts.
• All tryout sessions must be attended in order to be eligible for an Upper Team.
• Tryout results will be posted at the Hillview Fields and at Shelby Town Hall the same evening after tryouts are completed as well as the players tryout numbers on the www.shelbyball.org website.
• A coach will contact players selected for Upper Teams and notify them of the date, time and location of the Upper Team Coach/Parent/Player Meeting they are required to attend.
NOTE: No parent or guardian of any player trying out for the Upper Teams will be allowed to participate in grading or selection of the players for the team their child is trying out for.
REGISTRATION AND ATTENDANCE
• A player MUST BE REGISTERED with Shelby Youth Ball AND a Tryout Registration Form must be on file before the first tryout session.
• Tryout dates and the number of Upper Team for the season are set by the Tryout Committee prior to the published registration dates.
• The number of teams can change based on tryout results.
• Every attempt should be made to attend the scheduled tryout sessions. However, if there is an unavoidable circumstance that prevents a player from attending the scheduled tryouts, a petition can be made to request a separate tryout for this player.
• The written petition would need to include the following: the player’s name, telephone number, birthdate, and SPECIFIC reason why the player cannot attend the scheduled tryouts.
NOTE: The petition must be received at the Shelby Town Hall by April 7, 2007 and the player is responsible for contacting a Softball Tryout Committee member below to confirm the status of the petition.
• Every effort will be made to honor the petition. However, there may be a possibility that one CANNOT be re-scheduled due to grader availability, field availability and/or weather conditions.
